LG Refrigerator Not Cooling? What to Check Before You Call

An LG refrigerator that’s running but not cooling is one of the most common calls we get in Denton. Before you book anyone — including us — run through these checks. A surprising number of “broken” fridges are fixed in ten minutes without a technician.

1. Rule out the simple stuff

Check the temperature setting first — it should be around 37°F for the fridge and 0°F for the freezer, and settings get bumped more often than you’d think. Then make sure the door is actually sealing: close it on a dollar bill; if the bill slides out with no resistance, the gasket isn’t gripping and warm air is leaking in.

2. Clean the condenser coils

Dirty coils are the single most common cause of weak cooling. Unplug the fridge, find the coils (on most LG models they’re behind the bottom rear panel), and vacuum off the dust. If it’s been years — or you have pets — this alone often restores cooling within a day.

3. Check the vents inside

Air moves from the freezer to the fridge section through vents. If they’re blocked by food — especially bags leaning against the back wall — the fridge side warms up while the freezer stays cold. Clear some space and give it 24 hours.

4. Listen for the fan, look for frost

Open the freezer: if the back panel has heavy frost buildup, or you don’t hear a fan running with the doors closed, you’re likely looking at a defrost problem or a failed evaporator fan. Some LG models with linear compressors also develop cooling loss that only shows up gradually. These are repairs, not DIY jobs — the parts are inexpensive but the diagnosis matters.

When to stop troubleshooting and call

If you’ve worked through the checks above and the problem is still there, the fix likely involves parts, sealed components, or electrical testing — that’s our job. Our service call is $99, and it applies to the total cost of the repair if you choose to fix the appliance. Same or next-day appointments are available for most calls in Denton and nearby cities.
