How to Use a Turbo Torch for Appliance Repair Brazing

Brazing is one of the most critical skills in sealed system appliance repair, and having the right torch makes all the difference. This video covers how to use a turbo torch for appliance repair brazing, including tips for clean, leak-free joints every time.

What Is Brazing and When Do You Need It?

Brazing is a metal-joining process used in refrigeration and sealed system repairs. Unlike soldering, brazing uses higher heat (above 840 degrees F) and creates a much stronger joint. In appliance repair, you need brazing whenever you work on refrigerant lines: replacing compressors, fixing leaks in evaporators or condensers, or splicing copper tubing. A bad braze joint leaks refrigerant, fails a pressure test, and sends you back for a callback.

Why Nitrogen Purge Is Non-Negotiable

When you heat copper without flowing nitrogen through the line, the inside of the tube oxidizes and forms black copper oxide scale. That scale breaks off and circulates through the refrigeration system, clogging the filter-drier or compressor. Always purge with nitrogen at 2-3 PSI while brazing. This protects the system and is standard practice on any professional sealed system repair.

Step-by-Step Brazing Process

  • Clean and deburr tubing with a reamer and emery cloth
  • Fit the joint with a slight gap so capillary action pulls braze material in
  • Set up nitrogen purge at 2-3 PSI flowing through the line
  • Heat the base metal, not the rod, and let the heat draw the braze material in
  • Apply the rod to the joint, not directly to the flame
  • Look for the braze to flow completely around the joint, bright and smooth
  • Let cool naturally then leak-test before recharging

Common Brazing Mistakes

Overheating turns the copper black and weakens the bond. Applying the rod directly to the flame burns the material before it flows. Skipping nitrogen purge is the most common mistake even when the joint looks perfect externally. Take your time on each joint. Rushing brazed connections is one of the top causes of refrigerant leaks on repaired appliances.
