GE Slide-In Range Control Board Replacement — What It Involves

A failed control board on a GE slide-in range can cause everything from a dead display to erratic burner behavior to an oven that won’t heat at all. In this video, we walk through a real GE slide-in range control board replacement so you know exactly what’s involved.

Signs Your GE Range Control Board Has Failed

  • Display is blank or shows error codes (F1, F2, F3, F7)
  • Burners won’t turn on or stay on at maximum heat only
  • Oven won’t heat or won’t stop heating
  • Random beeping with no buttons pressed
  • Range works intermittently — sometimes fine, sometimes not

What the Control Board Does

The control board (also called the ERC — Electronic Range Control) is the brain of the range. It processes every input from the touchpad, controls the bake and broil relays, manages the clock and timer, and communicates with the temperature sensor. When it fails, it can take out multiple functions at once.

Common Causes of Control Board Failure

  • Power surge or lightning strike — the most common cause
  • Overheating due to poor ventilation around the range
  • Moisture intrusion from boil-overs getting into the control panel
  • Age — boards on ranges 10+ years old are prone to capacitor failure
  • Relay burnout from a shorted bake or broil element

Before Replacing the Board

Always test the bake and broil elements first. A shorted element will burn out a new control board within minutes. If the element caused the original failure, you need to replace both together. We also recommend a power reset (unplug for 5 minutes) before concluding the board has failed — this clears error codes that can trigger from voltage fluctuations.

Cost of Repair

GE control boards typically run $120–$250 depending on the model. Labor adds 45–60 minutes. If your range is under 10 years old, the repair almost always makes financial sense compared to replacement. For ranges over 12 years old, we’ll give you an honest cost-vs-replace assessment.

GE Models Frequently Needing This Repair

  • GE Profile slide-in ranges (PS series)
  • GE Café slide-in ranges (CS series)
  • Standard GE slide-in electric ranges (JS series)
  • GE Adora ranges
