Dryer Runs But No Heat: The 4 Usual Causes

A dryer that tumbles fine but blows cold (or barely warm) air almost always comes down to one of four things. Here’s the honest breakdown — including the one you can fix yourself today.

1. A clogged vent (check this one yourself)

When lint blocks the vent line, the dryer can’t move air, overheats internally, and safety devices cut the heat. Pull the dryer out, disconnect the vent hose, and look inside — both the hose and the wall duct. If clothes have been taking two cycles to dry, this is almost certainly your problem, and it’s also a genuine fire risk: lint buildup is one of the leading causes of house fires. Clean the lint filter every single load.

2. A blown thermal fuse

The thermal fuse is a one-time safety device that kills the heat when the dryer overheats — usually because of the clogged vent above. Once blown, it never resets; the dryer runs but never heats again. Replacing it is a quick repair, but if the vent that caused it isn’t cleaned, the new fuse blows too.

3. A failed heating element (electric dryers)

Heating element coils burn out with age. If the vent is clear and the fuse tests fine, this is the next suspect on electric models.

4. A weak igniter or gas valve coil (gas dryers)

Gas dryers heat through an igniter and gas valve. A weak igniter or failed valve coils produce exactly this symptom — the drum spins, the igniter may even glow, but no flame holds. Gas-side repairs are not DIY territory.
