Dishwasher Leaving Dishes Dirty? Try These 5 Things First

Before you assume your dishwasher is dying, try these five things — in our experience, more than half of “dishes come out dirty” complaints are solved without a repair.

1. Clean the filter

Twist out the filter basket at the bottom of the tub and rinse it under hot water. A clogged filter recirculates dirty water over your dishes. If you’ve never done this, do it today — and then monthly.

2. Unclog the spray arms

Pull the spray arms off (most twist or snap out), and poke through each hole with a toothpick. Hard North Texas water plugs them with mineral deposits over time. Soak in warm vinegar for 30 minutes if they’re crusty.

3. Fix the loading, not the machine

Face the dirtiest surfaces toward the center, don’t nest bowls, and make sure nothing blocks the spray arms from spinning — give the lower arm a spin by hand before you close the door. Scrape plates, but don’t pre-rinse spotless; detergent needs something to work on.

4. Reconsider the detergent

Old or clumped powder loses strength, and bargain brands underperform in hard water. Try a name-brand pod plus a rinse aid for two weeks before judging the machine.

5. Run the hot water first

Run the kitchen tap until it’s hot right before starting the cycle, so the dishwasher fills hot from the first gallon. Cold fills are a quiet cause of bad wash performance.

If dishes are still coming out dirty after all five, the likely culprits are a failing wash pump, water inlet valve, or heater — real repairs where a proper diagnosis pays for itself.
